The Scottish Tourist Board Grading System...
...Introducing the Scottish Tourist Board (STB) Quality Assurance Scheme, where trained and impartial inspectors visit the properties every year.
Quality makes or breaks a visit. This is why it is the quality of the welcome and service, the food, the hospitality, ambience and the comfort and condition of the property which earns Scottish Tourist Board Stars, not the size of the accommodation or the mere satisfying of a checklist of available facilities
The easy to understand system tells you at a glance the quality standard of all types and sizes of accommodation from the smallest B&B and self-catering cottage to the largest countryside and city centre hotel
Using a scale of 1-5 Stars, it provides the reassurance you need about what to expect before you arrive.
A concise definition of what to expect from each star grading is given below.

UK-APAS...
...The UK Accommodation Providers Alert Scheme is an affiliation of accommodation providers across the UK, whose purpose is to alert others in the accommodation business of the many scams and cons that are targeted against them.
Information is acquired from a wide range of sources including UK-APAS Members, Tourist Boards, AA, RAC, Trading Standards Officers & the Police, and is provided to Members in the form of Email Bulletins.
Fighting such fraud is important, both for the peace of mind & security of property for genuine guests and the avoidance of costs which, inevitably, result in increased room rates for honest travellers (more information).
